Leo XIV Received Cardinal Eijk Following Months of Health Problems
Today, Pope Leo XIV received Cardinal Willem Jacobus Eijk, 73, of Utrecht, in audience.
AdVaticanum.com reported that the audience comes amid renewed attention to the cardinal’s health. Cardinal Eijk was absent from both extraordinary consistories convened by Pope Leo XIV this year, in January and June, with his absence from the June gathering reported as health-related.
His health problems stretch back more than two decades.
In 2001, while serving as Bishop of Groningen, he suffered a brainstem infarction. One of its lasting consequences was severe facial pain.
On March 2, 2020, the Archdiocese of Utrecht published excerpts from a letter Cardinal Eijk had sent that day to members of pastoral teams. The letter concerned treatment he had undergone abroad for the facial pain caused by his 2001 brainstem infarction.

The culture of death is a rejection of God
In legalizing and promoting the culture of death through abortion, euthanasia and other evils that degrade human life, we reject God and His plan for humanity. The Creator instructs us to choose life, but too often we now intentionally choose death. We act as if life belongs to us when it doesn't. For God is God, and we're not. After more than 450 years, the Jesuits are preparing to leave the Belgian city of Liège, ending one of the region’s oldest Catholic educational traditions.
Liège Diocese views the departure “with sadness, but also with deep gratitude.”
The first Jesuits arrived in Liège shortly after the founding of the Society of Jesus in 1540.
During the 16th century, they established major colleges in the city and helped shape its religious and intellectual life for centuries.
In the 19th century, the Jesuits took over the Collège Saint-Servais on Rue Saint-Gilles, which became the center of their work in Liège.
The Jesuit community on Rue Saint-Gilles will officially close at the end of the school year. A thanksgiving Eucharist will be celebrated on June 13 to mark the end of the Jesuits’ long presence in Liège.

Vittorio Messori Has Died
Catholic Italian author Vittorio Messori, 84, died on Good Friday in Desenzano, Italy.
One of his most influential works was The Ratzinger Report, which was based on an interview with Joseph Ratzinger conducted in 1984. The book evaluated the Church's condition following the Second Vatican Council.
Messori also collaborated with Pope John Paul II on the book Crossing the Threshold of Hope. In it, the Pope wrote that Jesus Christ is the unique Saviour of humanity and that Christianity contains the fullness of revealed truth.
Throughout his career, Messori was renowned for his loyalty to the Church, coupled with his intellectual independence.
