A restoration project estimated to cost €12 million failed to secure funding. Founded around 1140 as a Cistercian abbey, La Trappe became the birthplace of the Trappist tradition. In 1664, Abbot Armand-Jean de Rancé introduced strict reforms to Cistercian monastic life. In 1892, the Trappist congregations formally separated from the Cistercian Order to form a new order known today as the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (OCSO).
