The Catholic Biblical Association has elected as its president a distinguished scholar who openly says: “I do not believe in Jesus as Lord.” There is nothing scandalous about Amy-Jill Levine saying that, she is admirably honest. She is a practising Jew. The extraordinary question is why an association constitutionally committed to Catholic biblical scholarship thinks the confession that Jesus Christ is Lord is apparently unnecessary for its highest office. At some point, we have to ask: what is the word “Catholic” actually doing?
1. Jüdin Präsidentin der Catholic Biblical Association Amy-Jill Levine, 1. jüdische Präsidentin der Catholic Biblical Association (USA): "I'm not a Christian. I'm not a Messianic Jew. I do not worship Jesus as Lord and Savior and for me the New Testament is not a Sacred Sripture. I will argue, I hope convincingly or at least I'm convinced that not all the comments the gospel writers attribute to Jesus were spken by him. I think they added some things."
By Peter Kreeft Without qualification, without ifs, ands, or buts, God's word tells us, straight as a left jab, that love is the greatest thing there is (1 Cor 13: 13). Scripture never says God is justice or beauty or righteousness, though he is just and beautiful and righteous. But "God is love" (1 Jn 4:8). Love is God's essence, his whole being. Everything in him is love. Even his justice is love. Paul identifies "the justice of God" in Romans 1:17 with the most unjust event in all history, deicide, the crucifixion, for that was God's great act of love. But no word is more misunderstood in our society than the word love. One of the most useful books we can read is C. S. Lewis' unpretentious little masterpiece The Four Loves. There, he clearly distinguishes agape, the kind of love Christ taught and showed, from storge (natural affection or liking), eros (sexual desire), and philia (friendship). It is agape that is the greatest thing in the world. The old word for agape in English was …
“People always come before borders, before definitions and institutions. “This realization stands at the center of Christianity. “Evil is not fought with evil. It is time to oppose the false realism that rearms minds, words, and nations with the realism of mercy.” — Pope Leo XIV
Great and important distinctions. A caveat, however - one must be wary of both, lest, like the 'Protestant ethic' mentality, one forgets that our Creator left the creation of the Sabbath as His penultimate gift to balance the rest.
